Institute Keynote Speakers

Amy HunterAmy Hunter is a licensed independent clinical social worker who earned her Masters of Social Work degree at Boston University in 1995. Amy has a post graduate certificate from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in early childhood mental health. Amy currently serves as the senior early childhood mental health specialist at the Early Head Start National Resource Center and the director of the Center for Social Emotional Foundations of Early Learning project at ZERO TO THREE.

 

Ms. Hunter will be the keynote speaker in Newport News and Staunton.  


Neal HorenNeal Horen is a clinical psychologist who has focused on community-based work for the last ten years. He is co-director of training and technical assistance for the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development as well as deputy director of the early childhood team of the National Technical Assistance Center. In addition, Dr. Horen is director of the H.O.Y.A. clinic which offers therapeutic and assessment services for children and families and is a TA specialist on Project Launch, a Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Association initiative aimed at implementing a public health approach to mental health in early childhood communities.

 

Dr. Horen will  be the keynote speaker in Roanoke, Fredericksburg, and Norfolk.


Deborah PerryDeborah Perry rejoined the faculty at the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development in January 2009.  She currently serves as the director for a newly funded Head Start Center for Effective Mental Health Consultation project and the co-principal investigator on a statewide evaluation of mental health consultation to child care in Maryland. Prior to that, she served on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Perry’s research focuses on community-based participatory approaches to designing and testing preventive interventions for young children and their caregivers.  Dr. Perry has a Ph.D. in maternal and child health and a master’s in psychology.

 

Dr. Perry will be the keynote speaker in Arlington.


Nefertiti BruceNefertiti Bruce is an early childhood specialist and a certified trainer for the Devereux Early Childhood Initiative.  She co-authored Building your Bounce: Simple Strategies for a Resilient You. She received her undergraduate degree from Virginia State University, and her graduate degree from Chestnut Hill College in Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the Devereux Early Childhood Initiative, Nefertiti worked as a preschool and kindergarten teacher in the city of Philadelphia.

 

Ms. Bruce will be the keynote speaker in Wytheville.


Mary MackrainMary Mackrain is the program director for an early childhood mental health consultation program in Michigan serving infants and toddlers at risk. She holds an Infant Mental Health Endorsement Level IV (Policy) through the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health and received her graduate degree in Educational Psychology from Wayne State University. She is also a national trainer and consultant for the Devereux Early Childhood Initiative and has co-authored the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment for Infants and Toddlers.

 

Ms. Mackrain will be the keynote speaker in Richmond.
